To the Editor:
A Herald article covering Brown’s annual Corporation meeting in October briefly mentioned the University’s issue of limited classroom and office space. For years, Brown has shoehorned classrooms into every nook and cranny on College Hill.
By hiring the Stoss Landscape Urbanism group to design accessibility and performance space at Simmons Quad — announced in President Paxson’s report on the Corporation meeting — the lens should be widened to include a reconsideration of the open space between Maxcy Hall and the Lincoln Field Building, where in the 1920s a greenhouse was located. This would be an ideal location for a tastefully designed classroom building.
More than a decade ago, Brown engaged New York architect Frances Halsband to survey the campus for available space, and she found lots of it, including this area. A classroom building there should become a top priority for the Brown leadership.
