Beyond the thousands of new students who walked through the Van Wickle Gates in September, 67 new faculty members have also joined the Brown community this semester.
“The depth of expertise and diversity among our newest scholars not only enrich our intellectual environment but also strengthen our ability to address complex global challenges with innovative and interdisciplinary approaches,” said University Provost Frank Doyle in a press release.
Most of the new faculty members are experts in the humanities and social sciences, followed by the life sciences, physical sciences and medicine.
A strong emphasis on research faculty was evident this year with 12 new hires. Last year, of the 56 new faculty members hired by Brown, only three were research faculty.
This push for research faculty is part of Brown’s Building on Distinction plan to “recruit and retain exceptional scholars who are engaged in research across the disciplines,” according to Brown’s website. Its Operational Plan for Investing in Research further seeks to invest in research across disciplines on issues ranging from Alzheimer’s disease to climate change.
