Summer at Brown cover photo

Between waves of COVID-19 cases and a steady rise in the vaccination rate on College Hill, Brown’s campus was alive again in the summer of 2021. Rather than staying at home, the majority of the class of 2024 returned to school for a summer semester, a component of the University’s three-semester calendar implemented to de-densify campus during the pandemic.

Over those two months, The Herald asked eight first-years to document a day in their summer lives at Brown through the lens of a disposable camera. Whether it was eating in dining halls, taking in-person classes or relaxing on the Main Green, they captured ordinary yet precious moments on campus that have been deeply missed.

Although the recent rise in cases and new temporary COVID-19 restrictions have once again put a full return to normalcy on hold, the past summer highlights what Brown once was to many students and what we can expect for the future.

My name is Edna Agyemang and I am a sophomore from Newark, New Jersey. I am considering both Africana Studies and Modern Culture and Media as concentrations. This year, I served as a first-year Liaison for the Black Student Union and interned for Audible in the summer as a part of their Original Content team. My favorite things to do at Brown include finding new food places, checking out vintage/thrift stores and watching the sunset at Prospect Terrace. I love photography, film and writing so I am always trying to find spaces that allow me to pursue those things at Brown.
