To the Editor:
In a March 18 editorial, The Herald’s editorial page board argued that students’ social media accounts should be cleaned up because inappropriate material on them reflects badly upon Brown. How about The Herald clean up its Blog by removing the juvenile, vulgar, obscene, pornographic “Sextion” feature?
That “online presence” is surely an important factor in the public’s perception of the University, and it doesn’t reflect favorably on the culture of the Brown campus.
It is also interesting that, in its interim report, Brown’s Task Force on Sexual Assault has determined that changes in the culture of the campus are necessary if the University is to be a “safe and welcoming place to learn.”
The interim report did not address those changes, but its final report will surely consider the following features of the campus culture that may influence sexual harassment and violence: coed and gender-neutral housing, Sex Power God, Sex Week, Condom Carnival, Nudity in the Upspace, Naked Donut Run. Add the general promotion of a “hooking up” culture by The Herald, student organizations and the University itself by virtue of permission granted for use of its property for the above listed activities.
