The following is an account of crime events that took place this weekend, reported to The Herald by Deputy Chief of Police for the Department of Public Safety Paul Shanley:
Between Saturday night and Sunday morning
DPS officers responded to a call about exit sign destruction in Olney House around 11:45 a.m. Sunday and discovered a total of 15 exit signs destroyed. Unknown suspects broke the signs and pulled them from the walls. This specific act of destruction of property has been very prevalent around campus in recent years, occurring most frequently in Keeney Quadrangle. The University responded to earlier cases of exit-sign destruction in the first-year residence hall with a campus-wide email in September informing residents they would be charged for any further damages. At this point, the University has not assessed any such payments.
Sunday afternoon
DPS officers responded to a fire alarm around 3 p.m. at Corliss-Brackett House, which houses the Office of Admissions. When the officers entered the building, they were immediately met by a large amount of water flowing down the stairs. It was determined the stream was caused by a burst water pipe on the fourth floor. The fire alarm was triggered when it detected a disruption in the fourth floor water flow. The Providence Fire Department as well as employees from Facilities Management met DPS officers at the house to aid in the clean up. The building suffered significant damage but the projected cost of repair is unclear.
