David Howard '09.5 was convicted of simple assault in District Court on Tuesday, according to the Providence Journal. Howard was accused of punching a patron while working as a bouncer at the Fish Company in April.
Howard, a preseason All-American and 2008 All-Ivy defensive lineman for Brown's football team, received one year's probation and was forced to pay court costs, the Journal reported. He was also ordered not to have contact with the victim, Paul Lilley, of Southborough, Mass.
Howard's lawyer, Mark Smith, announced that an appeal will be filled in Superior Court, the Journal reported.
According to a police report, Howard punched Lilley several times in the face after escorting him from the bar during a party for Bryant University students. Lilley and a witness identified Howard as the attacker.
The bar was filled with Bryant students who had paid $20 for tickets that offered "all they could eat and drink," attendees told the police. Howard removed Lilley from the bar after he complained about being told to pay for drinks, according to the police report.
Following a hearing with the Board of Licenses in August, Fish Co. agreed to shut its doors for three days as punishment for the altercation.
The Journal reported in August that Jay Kern, the owner of Fish Co., told the board that he admitted to the facts in the police report, saying that the situation got out of control when many more patrons showed up than were expected.
