To the editor:
In your editorial regarding the debate over seniority-based salaries ("Seniority and its discontents", Sept. 16), your recommendation that students at Brown involve themselves in programs to improve education in Providence and elsewhere is praiseworthy.
I would like to offer another opportunity to students to improve local schools that was not mentioned. There is growing community support for a number of major educational reforms, such as creating a system for equitable school funding and improving school capacity to put the best teachers in every classroom, among others reforms. Local education coalitions are working to support these changes, and involvement in such advocacy would allow Brown students to influence policies that could improve education for thousands of students.
I would invite students interested in education to consider advocacy as another way to make a difference.
