UCS elects executive board members

The Undergraduate Council of Students held a special meeting Monday night to fill open executive board positions and confirm College Curriculum Council appointments.

Council members gathered in the Upper Blue Room and spent the bulk of the meeting electing members to six positions on the executive board: appointments chair, communications chair, secretary, alumni relations liaison, corporation liaison and UCS/UFB representative.

"This is an unofficial meeting," said UCS President John Gillis '07. "This year the (executive board) really wants to focus on making sure we hit the ground running and make our Wednesday meetings as efficient as possible this year."

After a series of short introductions to explain the various roles and responsibilities of each position, candidates were allowed to speak before the voting body for two minutes while opposing candidates waited outside. The open executive board positions were filled by a secret ballot vote among the voting members of UCS.

The first position filled was the appointments chair, which "appoints undergraduates to various University committees which are the governing bodies of the University," said Ben Boas '06.5, a class representative and former appointments chair. Drew Madden '10 ran unopposed and will fill this position.

Class of 2008 Representative Lauren Kolodny '08 was elected liason to the Brown Corporation.

Lisa Gomi '10 was elected to serve as secretary. "I think it's really important to take the minutes and have them posted online," Gomi said.

Michael Glassman '09 was elected communications chair. Glassman said he wants to make sure campus-wide e-mails are concise and clear.

Melissa Revotskie '09, a class representative, was elected alumni relations liaison. Revotskie said she will also work with the Career Development Center to plan career fairs that offer employers that interest a larger portion of students than the limited sectors currently represented.

Former UCS President and current At-Large Representative Brian Bidadi '07 was elected UCS/UFB Representative.

Earlier in the meeting, the council confirmed the elections of five representatives for the class of 2010, seven at-large representatives for UCS and one at-large representative for UFB.

The council then moved on to confirm four CCC representatives and two alternates. The representatives are David Beckoff '08, Natasha Bronn '07, Joyce Kwok '08 and Zac Townsend '08.

UCS will resume its regular meetings this Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Petteruti Lounge.
