Hartigan '06 nets more awards
Tri-captain Nick Hartigan '06 is quickly making voting for the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week a formality, capturing the award for the fifth time in six weeks this season. He earned the award after last Saturday's 192-yard, four-touchdown performance in Brown's 38-21 victory over Yale.
Hartigan's astounding season also continues to generate national acclaim. Two weeks ago he was featured in separate articles in USA Today and The New York Times, and on Sunday he was in the fourth spot on ESPN's Top 10 countdown narrated by Chris Berman '77.
As his Brown career winds down, Hartigan continues to pile up career milestones, passing the 4,000-yard rushing mark on Saturday - only the fourth back in Ivy League history to accomplish such a feat. He needs just 138 yards to move into third place on the all-time rushing list.
But as Hartigan is quick to point out, none of the honors matter if Brown does not capture an Ivy title. That is now within striking distance for the Bears, who are in a tie with Princeton for first place at 4-1 (7-1 overall). If Brown wins out, it will capture at least a share of its first league title since 1999. By virtue of their win this weekend, the Bears climbed two spots to No. 20 in this week's Division I-AA poll. They return to action against Dartmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m. in their final game this season at Brown Stadium.
Fencing stabs four medals to open season
The fencing team opened its 2005-6 campaign with a bang, winning four medals at The Big One on Saturday at Smith College in Northampton, Mass. The highlight for Brown was the women's epee team, which placed all four of its competitors in the top nine.
All-American and tri-captain Ruth Schneider '06 opened her senior campaign with her third victory at The Big One, winning the epee title by defeating teammate Christine Livoti '08, 6-5 in overtime.
Christina Salvatore '09 had an impressive career debut, placing fifth in the field of 49, while Lucy Walker '06 was ninth.
The women's saber squad also produced a medalist in Olivia Partyka '06, who took bronze, while Charlotte Gartenberg '08 finished two spots behind her.
The men's team also was missing a key fencer in tri-captain and saberist Jeremy Adler '06, who injured his ankle during practice last week and missed the meet. In his absence, Dan Mahoney '07 was tops for the saberists in fifth, while Sam Levine '08 was three spots behind.
The lone medal for the men came in epee, where Adrian Martin '06 took silver in the field of 52. David Berliner '09 also narrowly missed an award in his collegiate debut, placing fifth.
Foil had a competitor in the top eight as well, with Nick Bender '09 taking sixth place in his first collegiate meet.
The two teams return to action at home on Nov. 19 in the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet.
LaVere '06 named Academic All-American
Sweeper Kim LaVere '06 was named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN the Magazine, garnering second team honors in District I. The Public and Private Sector Organizations concentrator earned the distinction by accumulating a 3.74 GPA.
LaVere finished the season second in points on the women's soccer team with nine. She also recorded game winning goals against Fordham University and national power Princeton University. The latter was the team's first victory over the Tigers since 1997.
