Congratulations Queer Alliance, you have embarrassed the University, yourselves and the gay community all over the world! Pete and Joe, who have been fighting for gay marriage up in Illinois, must have been thrilled when they saw "SEX POWER GOD" on CNN. And Lucy and Amy, who just adopted a child and are constantly trying to raise awareness that same-sex couples can be good parents, were overjoyed at how gays were portrayed in the segment.
With wicked cool parties like "Sex Power God" and "Starf*ck" Queer Alliance is doing a sensational job of destroying all the stereotypes that hurt the gay Community. What better way to promote equality than by having their two biggest events of the year be drunken orgies?
If I was gay right now I would be super pissed. In fact, I'm not gay and I'm pretty pissed because I believe in equality and equal rights, and Queer Alliance put them in jeopardy. So I have a few questions.
First and foremost, what the hell were you thinking?
People went to the hospital because your staff was too stupid or irresponsible to stop people who were absolutely mangled at the door. Don't say "we didn't serve alcohol." Fine, you aren't liable, we get it. But I would be willing to put my college loans on the fact that your door staff allowed "water" bottles and other liquor into Sayles Hall. Perhaps I sound like a mother when I say this, but you guys are lucky someone didn't die. And maybe someone did somewhere else because half the Ambulances in Providence were carting drunk, naked people downtown to get their stomachs pumped. But it was a great party.
Not only that, but your brilliant doorstaff let in a Fox News employee who filmed the whole thing. I couldn't help but laugh when one of the girls caught in her underwear sucking face with someone was "offended" by the fact they put her on national TV. Newsflash! You got wasted, took off your clothes, went to the main green and made out with someone in front of a freaking camera!
If you want to get drunk and nail someone in a bathroom stall, or give someone fellatio on the dance floor, by all means go ahead and do it. Just don't be shocked when the vast majority of homos and heteros think that you are kinda gross. Having sex in the middle of Sayles Hall underneath the portraits of ex-Brown presidents in front of 400 people seems kinda wrong to me. I know, I know .. I'm up-tight. What can I say?
Here's a piece of advice though. When you throw a party like that, you might want to consider dropping "God" from the label. Considering that the gay community is often offended and prejudiced by a generally homophobic America, it seems that the smartest thing to do would not be to retaliate and offend the about four billion people on this planet who believe in God.
I guess what I'm trying to get across is this: Queer Alliance endorses and hosts a party that sends too many people to the hospital. Endorses a party that has people having sex in the middle of the floor of one of the oldest and most important buildings on campus. Endorses a party that is meant to offend people of any religious faith.
So Queer Alliance, when you start campaigning for gay marriage, for equal rights, who the hell will take you seriously? And can you really blame them when they don't? It doesn't matter to a lot of people what your sexual orientation is. But it does matter if you are irresponsible and stupid. Or if you are disrespectful to others.
What you did on Saturday reinforced every single stereotype as to why gay people are different and why society should not accept them. If I was Peter and Joe trying to get a wedding permit, I'd be seething because I just got shot in the foot by Brown's Queer Alliance.
Do not feed me some b.s. that how people act at your party isn't your problem or that you can't control how drunk people are. You guys messed up. You embarrassed one of the best universities in the world. Embarrassed the entire gay community. Embarrassed anyone who believes in equality for gays.
But of course the immediate retort to this is that I'm some conservative homophobe afraid of gay sexuality out in the open. Oooooh, the bullet-proof comeback to anyone who challenges Sex Power God. How mature, can you grow a full beard too?
The fact is that the Queer Alliance wasn't irresponsible, disrespectful, embarrassing and stupid last weekend because they are gay. They were irresponsible, disrespectful, embarrassing and stupid last weekend because they were irresponsible, disrespectful, embarrassing and stupid last weekend.
See you at Starf*ck.
Carman McNary '08 will actually see you at Starf*ck.
